Yep, you can pay somebody to do this. But you get what you pay for.
There are only so many times you can go up the ladder to clean out your gutters before you start to wonder if this isn’t perhaps a job you can farm out to someone else. And, in fact, it’s easy to find people to clean your gutters. But it’s also easy to stumble into a home improvement nightmare. Here’s how to find the right person…
Word of mouth is generally how most companies get their business; think about all the times you’ve tried something out because somebody you trust has recommended it to you. So it makes sense to ask your friends if they use somebody to clean their gutters.
The problem is really twofold, here: First of all, experiences may vary between customers, and your best bud’s idea of good service is your idea of awful. Secondly, the recommendations can vary widely; all people might be able to recommend is their uncle Phil, because he has a ladder and could use the cash. And no offense to uncle Phil, but this is a job for the professionals.
If you’re looking for somebody to just show up and take care of it, Craigslist might be a good option. It’s certainly a cheap option, but the problem is that you get what you pay for.
For example, it’s a common scam for crooks to go on Craigslist, look for somebody looking to have some work done under the table, and then deliberately injure themselves on your property. Why? Because if they hurt themselves on your property, you’re on the hook for any injuries and other problems. Or unscrupulous contractors may take the job and then deliberately cause damage to your home, which they will then graciously fix if you just pay them up front.
Angie’s List is a subscriber-based website that tries to aggregate word-of-mouth. Customers pay for the right to review businesses and have to be verified by the site; the idea is that because you have to pay, there are fewer profane reviews or attempts to manipulate review scores.
The problem, of course, is that it’s only 1.5 million people. There may not be any reviews in your area, or only one or two to base your decision on, and that’s a bit flimsy for something that could cost you some money.
