Gutter Screen MA
Winter is (finally) fading away with milder weather taking hold for spring. This is the perfect time of year to tackle outdoor home improvement projects, particularly those involving roofs and gutters, which are much more challenging to access when they’re covered in ice and snow.
As the snow melts
, many homeowners find themselves up on ladders, cleaning out their gutters, removing debris that has been hidden for months, clogging up the works. Cleaning gutters is an unpleasant task that almost no one enjoys doing. So it’s nice to know that there are some excellent gutter screen options on the market that can reduce or even eliminate the need to climb up that ladder.
When choosing a gutter screen, Massachusetts (MA) homeowners typically ask three big questions: What is a gutter screen, exactly? What types of gutter screen options are available? Which gutter screen option is best for my home? Read on to learn more.
What is a gutter screen, exactly?
Gutter screens are, as the name implies, screens used to cover a home’s gutters, preventing animals and debris from blocking those gutters while allowing water to flow through the screen and gutters unimpeded.
What types of gutter screen options are available?
When choosing a gutter screen, MA homeowners have a lot of options: Metal or plastic, arched or flat, mesh or screen, and so on. There are numerous styles of gutter screens, gutter covers, and gutter guards on the market, all of which are ultimately meant to keep everything but water out of gutters. However, as with nearly all home improvement materials, the options are not all equal. Some gutter screens, covers, or guards are simply better than others. Conversely, sometimes the materials are all of equal quality, in which case, MA homeowners may want to consider cost, aesthetics, reputation, warranty terms, and ease of installation when deciding which to choose.
Which gutter screen option is best for my home?
Every home is a bit unique, so it’s always a good idea to have a licensed contractor come assess your need for gutter screens. MA and other northeastern homes can benefit tremendously from the professional installation of quality gutter screens.
For areas prone to extreme weather, one of the most frequently recommended options is the Gutter Helmet. Gutter Helmet is a unique, maintenance-free product that doesn’t rely on screens to protect gutters. Instead, Gutter Helmet blocks all debris from entering gutters while using a patented design to channel water into the gutters and away from roofs.
Particularly in snow-prone areas, Gutter Helmet is preferable to gutter screens. MA homeowners often struggle with ice dams or frozen gutters, which can cause significant and very costly damage to roofs, gutters, and attached structures. Gutter Helmet is available with a heating cable option to alleviate these problems. With the spring beginning to bloom in New England, now is a great time to go and check out your home’s gutters. With all of the ice, snow and wind this winter, there could be debris in your gutters, even if you cleaned them out last fall. It is also a great way to take a look around and make sure there aren’t any other areas of damage or concern.
If you do not want to climb up the ladder to your roof, you can always look into getting a gutter cover. RI homeowners experience all four seasons so they will get the most bang for their buck with one of these systems. In spring and summer, the rainwater will fall freely throughout your gutters, rather than overflowing or pooling near you foundation where it can cause damage.
In fall, the gutter cover will keep leaves, needles and other debris out of your gutters so they will not clog up you gutters and cause water damage to your home. And, in winter, it can protect your home against ice dams when used in conjunction with our heated helmet product. As you can see, you are protecting your home year round by installing a gutter cover. RI homeowners who are interested should think of installing it now, before the height of the spring’s rainy weather.

Gutter Covers: The BasicsIn an area prone to heavy snow and rain, homeowners often have to be proactive in their property maintenance. For example, excessive snow and rain can be particularly damaging to roofs and
gutters, and that can lead to costly repairs. Backed up gutters are among the most common issues homeowners experience in snowy areas, and these can lead to
ice dams, attic mold, roof and siding damage, and other expensive headaches. For homeowners in
Massachusetts (MA), gutter covers are an ideal solution to the challenges presented by clogged gutters.
Odds are, if you live in Massachusetts, gutter covers aren’t a

foreign concept. However, despite their popularity and benefits, many Massachusetts homeowners find themselves regularly hand-cleaning their gutters. Understandably, in tough economic times, many people are hesitant to take on what they perceive as a large or expensive home improvement project, such as installing
gutter covers. MA homeowners, however, can end up saving substantial amounts of money by installing gutter covers. Massachusetts homes take a lot of abuse from the weather, and gutter covers can help.
What is a gutter cover and what does it do?A gutter cover is exactly what it sounds like: it’s a type of shield designed to cover and protect a home’s gutters. The obvious benefit is that, with the right gutter cover, MA homeowners can reduce or even eliminate the need to clean their gutters. Any homeowner who has come across an unwelcome, unexpected, furry “tenant” while cleaning his or her gutters will certainly attest to how unpleasant cleaning gutters can be. However, gutter covers go far beyond keeping homeowners’ hands clean and safe from nesting critters.
Gutter covers actually prevent significant amounts of the weather-related damage common in Massachusetts. Gutter covers, in fact, help prevent roof damage, cracked foundations, landscape erosion, and siding damage. They also protect against insect and animal intrusion, all while beautifying a home by keeping the roofline clean and free of debris. Ultimately, this simple addition to a home can help prevent costly, labor-intensive repairs while allowing homeowners to spend less time up on the roof.
Of course, in Massachusetts, gutter covers won’t keep snow off your roof; nothing will. But gutter covers will make it a bit easier to remove accumulated snow, which is an essential part of protecting your roof.
So how do I choose?Like nearly all other home improvement products, gutter covers are not all created equally. There are many manufacturers with a multitude of products on the market, and that means homeowners need to do their homework before choosing the product that’s right for them.
When selecting gutter covers, consider the following:
- Does installing these gutter covers impact my roof warranty?
- Do these gutter covers work well with the pitch of my roof?
- Will these gutter covers really eliminate the need for hand-cleaning my gutters?
- Will these gutter covers perform well in extreme weather?
- Are these gutter covers available in colors and materials that complement my home?
- Do this brand of gutter cover offer a lifetime warranty?
- Will these gutter covers be custom-cut specifically for my home?
As with any home improvement project, when installing gutter covers, Massachusetts homeowners should be sure to obtain two or three estimates, check the provider’s Better Business Bureau reputation, and get some referrals. Always ensure that the installer is licensed, bonded, and insured as applicable in your area, and insist on a signed contract.

If you live in New England, you have been wishing for spring to come before the winter even started. Unfortunately, there are still a few months left of winter. There are some things you should be aware of as a homeowner in order to escape this winter without any damage to your home.
The official word of the winter- Ice Dam
It seems like everywhere you go homeowners are talking about ice dam removal in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. However, most people don’t even know what an ice dam is until they experience one. An ice dam is ice that builds up on the edge of your home’s roof and prevents water (or melting ice and snow) from flowing off your roof and into your gutters and downspouts. Since the water can’t flow off the roof, it backs up and eventually will find its way into your home. The ice dam damage usually shows up on your ceilings, walls, insulation and roof. The image to the left showcases the formation of the ice dam.
While it is impossible to prevent roof ice dams in Rhode Island and Massachusetts, there are a few ice dam prevention tips that may decrease the chances of an ice dam developing on your roof. If your home is under-insulated and not properly ventilated, it could be the cause for the ice dam on the roof. When the ice starts to melt, it turns back to ice once it hits 32 degrees. If your home isn’t insulated enough, there could be spots of your roof that are 32 degrees and under causing the ice to form in those areas rather than flowing off of your roof. Cracked shingles and an old roof also give water an entryway into your home.
New Winter Project- Shoveling Your Roof
While it is usually ill-advised to go onto your home’s roof in Rhode Island and Massachusetts during the winter months due to the treacherous conditions, most homeowners will have to venture up there this year. Because of the large amount of snow and the frequency of the snow storms, your home’s roof has a few feet of snow on it. In previous winters, we would have a few weeks of sun to melt the snow before the next storm. This year, we will have to manually get the snow off of the roof in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. This is an extremely dangerous task. In most cases, it is advised that a professional clean the roof for you. Besides the fact that roof rakes are sold out everywhere, it is extremely easy to fall off the roof with the amount of ice and snow on there.

Through all of this snow and ice have you taken the time to go outside and look at your home? Looking at your home is an easy way to see a problem before it arises. Do you have large icicles forming over your gutters with snow on top? If so, you may be at risk for ice dams. While the pitch of your roof may help elevate some of the odds of forming ice dams, there is really no way to prevent them. One way to minimize your risk is through cleaning your clogged gutters. MA homeowners should have properly prepared their homes for the winter this fall. This includes cleaning you home’s gutters so they function properly during the winter months. Clogged gutters cause the ice and snow to back up onto your roof, forming the beginning stages of an ice dam. As the ice and snow begins to melt, your clogged gutters may be hindering the water from melting into the gutters and down the downspouts. If the water has nowhere to go, it may start melting into your home causing excessive water damage. When it comes to clogged gutters, MA homeowners should be diligent about staying on top of this problem in order to prevent further damage later on due to neglect.
If your home has clogged gutters, Massachusetts homeowners can fill out the form on the right for a free consultation for our gutter protection system, Gutter Helmet. Gutter Helmet’s patented nose forward design lets in water and keeps out debris, preventing you from having to clean your gutters. It also can be used in conjunction with our heated helmet to effectively and efficiently melt ice and snow away from your home, decreasing the odds of your home forming ice dams.

Let’s face it, the
Northeast has some crazy weather and our homes have to stand up to all of it. Your house is your shield from the elements including the sun, wind, snow, and sleet. We usually think of our homes as a static structure but this isn’t exactly true. Your home is actually a living breathing system that needs continuous care and maintenance. Your furnace needs cleaning, roof needs to breath, and gutters need to function.
Did you know that clogged gutters can contribute to Sick House Syndrome? Gutters primary function is to divert water away from your home. When gutters are clogged, they can’t divert water effectively and the water finds an alternate path. This path could be through your roof and fascia board leaking into your home. It could also be straight down resulting in ground and foundation erosion and flooding in your basement. The best solution to this problem is Gutter Helmet
Gutter Protection. MA and RI are served by our
Gutter Helmet location in Woonsocket, RI. We can install a gutter cover that will keep leaves and other debris out of your gutters, leaving them free to divert water away from your home.

This winter has been relentless for snow storms and has been causing many problems for homeowners. All of this heavy snow and ice can really weigh down your home’s roof and cause it to cave in. Another concern with all of the ice and snow is ice dams. If you did a less than stellar job in cleaning your gutters this fall season, it may come back to haunt you. Dirty, clogged gutters don’t allow the ice and snow to melt and drain away from your home. This causes the gutters to make up onto your home’s roof, potentially causing an ice dam. Ice dams cause serious water damage because they are water that is trapped and the only place for it to go is into your home.
If you don’t want to have to worry about cleaning out your gutters each fall, you should invest in gutter protection. RI homeowners must be diligent in cleaning their gutters year round so they can function properly in all four seasons. Unfortunately, many homeowners are realizing that they were a little too relaxed in cleaning their gutters and now it is resulting in damage. A gutter protection system, like Gutter Helmet, goes on top of your home’s gutters. This causes snow and ice to sit on top of the gutters and then melt off, rather than sitting inside your gutter frozen and then clogging the gutters and downspouts. Not having to clean your gutters in another advantage to gutter protection. RI homeowners may find this tempting after such harsh winter weather.
